FMCH Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I pay my bill?

You may pay your hospital bill at Outpatient Registration or in the FMCH Business Center from 8-12 and 1-4:30, or in the Emergency Room at any time. Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express are accepted.

Can visitors eat in the cafeteria?

Yes, the hospital cafeteria is designed for visitors and hospital employees.

What are the cafeteria hours?

Breakfast is served from 7:00 - 9:30 am, Lunch is from 10:30 am - 1:00 pm and Dinner is available from 5:00 - 6:30 pm. The cafeteria is open 7 days a week.

Where can I make a phone call?

There are payphones located in the Outpatient, Emergency Room and Surgery Waiting Areas, as well as in the Professional Office Building near the vending machines. Every patient room is also equipped with a telephone. Phone cards for long distance calling may be purchased in the gift shop.

When are visiting hours?

FMCH invites all visitors, however we encourage visits between 10 am and 9 pm.

When is the best time to visit OB patients?

FMCH encourages visitors to the Obstetrics Department from 10 am - 2 pm and 4 pm - 8 pm. This ensures mothers get the rest they need throughout their stay.

Why aren't children allowed in OB?

Only the newborn's siblings are allowed to visit in the Obstetrics Department. This reduces the spread of germs.

When does the hospital shuttle run?

The courtesy van schedules are below. For more information call 319-376-2227. When scheduling appointments with your doctor or the hospital, please notify them of your plans to ride the FMCH Courtesy Van.

The Donnellson pickup point is Fairview & Southview Senior Housing. The West Point pickup is the Parkview Apartments. Pickups can be made at Casey's General Store in Montrose by appointment.

Does the hospital have a bus that takes patients to Iowa City?

No, however, the Eichacker Center coordinates rides to Iowa City on the UI shuttle. Patients must call 319-372-4471 at least 24 hours in advance to reserve a ride. This shuttle runs Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The shuttle will pick the patients up at their home between 6:15 and 6:45 a.m. and will arrive in Iowa City at 8:30 a.m. It leaves the University of Iowa Hospital Main Entrance at 3:00 p.m. The cost is $18 per person, roundtrip.

How can I express a concern, make a suggestion or pass along a compliment?

There are comment boxes located throughout the hospital that visitors are encouraged to place their completed comment cards into. The hospital's Administration also welcomes these calls at 319-376-2250.

How do I contact a patient?

Patients in rooms 101 - 124 may be contacted by telephone by dialing 319-376-2 + last two digits of room number +1. Example: To reach Room 101, dial 319-376-2011. Patients in rooms 125 - 141 may be contacted by dialing 319-376-24 + last two digits of the room number. Example: To reach Room 125, dial 319-376-2425.

What assistance programs are available to help cover health care costs for disabled and/or low-income individuals and families?

Medicaid is an assistance program for low-income families backed by the federal government. For information on this program, call the Lee County Department of Human Services at 319-372-3651.

Iowa Hawk-I is a program that provides health care coverage for those who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to buy health insurance. The program covers children ages 0-18. You must be a resident of Iowa to qualify. Cost of the program depends on income but will not exceed $20 per family. The program will cover visits to the doctor, hospital admissions, as well as visits to the dentist and eye doctor. There is a short application to complete and proof of income is required. Iowa Compass is a free and confidential information and referral service for Iowans with all types of disabilities and their families. The program provides help locating local, state and national agencies providing services such as health care, transportation, financial support, education and legal aid.
