Prenatal Education Classes

The BirthPlace offers a series of prenatal education classes for expectant parents to help answer your questions and prepare you for the changes ahead.  All educational classes are free of charge and designed for both the mother and her partner or support person.  Classes are held at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Prepared Childbirth: This class is offered during the last trimester. This is a 3-part course to prepare mom and her partner for the birth experience. Topics include: relaxation, breathing, pain control, labor & delivery, C-Section, mom & baby care and breastfeeding. A tour of The BirthPlace is included. This class is held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the FMCH Willard Conference Room.
 
Prepared Childbirth, One Day Session: This class is offered during the last trimester. This class is offered during the last trimester. This class offers the same topics as the 3-part Prepared Childbirth course but in a special one-day session. Lunch is provided. This session runs from 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and is held in the Canella Conference Room.
 
Breastfeeding Class: This is a one-day class and is open to expectant mothers in their last trimester. This class will help to prepare mom for breastfeeding and will also offer support for mom when she begins to breastfeed. Topics include: Benefits of breastfeeding, techniques, troubleshooting, and a question/answer time.
 
Sibling Class: Children age 3-12 are invited to participate in FMCH's Sibling Class. This course helps children prepare and adjust to a new baby and is offered during the last trimester. The one-session class runs from 6:00-7:00 p.m. This class is held in The BirthPlace.
 
Baby Weigh In: These sessions allow time for mothers to offer each other support, talk about breastfeeding and weigh their babies to check their growth. These sessions are offered weekly for new mothers only. This session is held in FMCH Suite 108.
